Via Cassia

The Cassia (light green from Rome to Genoa) Pelgrims on Via Cassia near Rome, by Oswald Achenbach

The Cassia was an important Roman road connecting Rome through Siena with Florentia (Florence). Hence, the road continued to Lucca, where she joined Aurelia. Perhaps she was named after the tyrant dancer Gaius Cassius Longinus, or to a slightly later Republican consul also called Cassius Longinus.

After Roman times, the Via Cassia remained an important road. Due to the wide width of time, up to 3 meters, large numbers of soldiers could quickly emerge. The current highway Strada Statale 2 Via Cassia, named after this ancient road, runs in the same region, but for the most part is another route.
