Henri Gavel


Henri Gavel (Saint-Pol-on-Ternoise, Pas-de-Calais, 22 de mayo of 1880 - Anglet, 15 de octubre of 1959) fue a Romanesque, Hispanist y vascólogo francés.

Romanist, he was a Spanish teacher at the Liceu de Bayona and there he came into contact with Basque, a language he learned and began to study. He became a member of the Society of Basque Studies and then taught at the Faculty of Letters in Toulouse. He also dominated the Gascon and became a veritable authority in Euskera, a language on which he contributed a great number of philological works, some of them classics. He was also interested in religious music and liturgy. Honorary member of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language, he also belonged to the Gascon Academy, Société de Sciences, Lettres et Arts de Bayonne, Société des Amis du Musée Basque, the Institut d'Études Occitanes and other institutions and associations. He published in the International Journal of Basque Studies, Gure Herria, Gernika, Euskera, Eusko-Jakintza, Bulletin du Musée Basque, among the Basque journals, and among the international ones in Annales du Midi, Annales of the Faculty of Letters of Toulouse , Bulletin of the Société des professeurs de langues meridionales et al. He wrote Eléments de phonétique basque in 1920, highly praised by Luis Michelena, and a Basque Grammaire.
