Leopold Speekaert (Brussels, 1834 - 1915) was a Belgian painter and designer.

Lifecycle

He received his earliest education at the artist J.B. Van Eycken in Brussels. In 1853 he wrote himself as a student in the Libre Saint-Luc Atelier, then with painter Ernest Slingeneyer as director. He is familiar with Louis Dubois, who shared his admiration for Gustave Courbet's oeuvre.

In 1869 he became a member of the Societe Libre des Beaux-Arts who grouped the most important Belgian realistic art painters. In 1878 he became a member of the Brussels artists' association La Chrysalide (founded in 1876), which also contained many avant-garde. Invited in 1886 at Les XX.

Speekaert painted landscapes from the surrounding area of ​​Brussels, cityscapes of ancient Brussels, marginal characters, allegorical and mythological subjects (the latter especially at the beginning of his career). He also designed designs for the art industry, including for airplanes. Speekaert lived for a long time in the Guldenvlieslaan 114. He later provided his later house, the "Hôtel Speekaert" in the Henri Jaspar Avenue, and his art collection at the municipality of Sint-Gillis.
