Charles-Louis Hanon

Charles-Louis Hanon.

Charles-Louis Hanon (July 2, 1819 - March 19, 1900) was a French piano composer and pedagogue. His best-known work was The virtuoso pianist in 60 exercises, which has been adopted today as a method for modern piano teachers.

Detractors of this method question the vices of use of independent fingers; therefore, Abby Whiteside, Chuan C. Chang and Jeroen Riemsdijk (golden fingers technique) consider it pernicious.

The famous pianist Vladimir Horowitz, acknowledged having learned part of his technique with these exercises.

In the nineties, a series of two volumes of exercises for piano-accordion emerged, based on a similar philosophy, a work that has been reissued.

A Hanon for guitar has also been published.
