Jan Rotgans


Jan Rotgans (Hoorn, Terschelling, February 11, 1881 - The Hague, July 15, 1969) was a Dutch graphic artist, illustrator, bookbuster designer and draftsman. He studied in Amsterdam at the Quellinus Arts and Crafts School, the Rijksnormaalschool, the Arts and Crafts Academy and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and received classes from Bart van Hove, Willem Molkenboer, Tiete van der Laars and Pieter Dupont.

In 1902, Jan Rotgans established himself as a designer of posters, illustrations and advertisements. He advertised a variety of companies. For the Spijker car, Rotgans makes an often displayed poster. He also signed advertising designs for Karel I, Kwatta, Philips, Van Nelle, Stork and Verkade. He also made cartoons for the magazine De Ware Jacob, but also in the Dutch Spectator, General Handelsblad and De Groene Amsterdammer appeared his drawings. He also worked as a bookbuster designer for various publishers.
