Puerta de Almocábar

Puerta de Almocábar.

The door of Almocábar is located in the southern part of Ronda connected to the historic center. It was built in the thirteenth century and was modified in the time of Charles V. It is composed of three successive gates plus two lateral semicircular towers. These served as accommodation for the guard. Its name comes from the Arabic "Al-maqabir" since it is located near the old Muslim cemetery. In front of the door, outside the city, is the square of San Francisco that was the place where the 20 of May of 1485, the Castilian troops congregated to the control of the Marquess of Cadiz. This put an end to the Arab domination of Ronda and its mountains. The Puerta de Almocábar was restored in 1961. The ensemble was given a Renaissance style and has been added the imperial aquiline shield of Carlos V.
