Schoterland Compagnonsvaart

The Schoterlandse Compagnonsvaart (Frisian: Schoterlandse Compagnonsvaart) is a canal in Friesland between Knipe and Hoornsterzwaag. History

In 1551, for the cattle mining in Heerenveen began to dig in the eastern direction of the Heeresloot, along the villages Het Meer, De Knipe, Bontebok, Jubbega - with a splitting towards the Tjonger and Hoornsterzwaag.

Between Gorredijk and Donkerbroek, Schotland Compagnonsvaart runs parallel to Opsterland Compagnonsvaart.

Four locks lay in order to bridge the altitude difference. The vessel had two functions: the area could be dewatered and served as a means of transport. The peat was removed with skuts and the canal was the only way of transport in the absence of roads.

In the sixties, the part between Heerenveen and De Knipe was muted. No ongoing shipping is possible. 52° 58′ NB, 6° 4′ OL
