Vojtěch Jírovec

Vojtech Jirovec

Vojtech Matyás Jírovec (also known as Adalbert Gyrowetz, February 20, 1763 - March 19, 1850) was a Czech composer and conductor.

He was born in Ceské Budejovice (German: Budweis). He received his first musical lessons from his father, who was an organist. He studied philosophy and law in Prague, but devoted himself completely to music. He worked in many centers of musical life and also as director in several noble houses. Between 1804 and 1831, he worked as a composer and orchestra conductor at the Vienna Court Theater. He died in Vienna.

As a composer, he was especially influenced by Joseph Haydn. Among his works he has about 60 symphonies; also wrote concerts, serenades, suites, operas and songs. His chamber music is very rich, especially his string quartets. A very important source of information is his own autobiography (1848), published in 1915 by Alfred Einstein.
