The street was named in honor of King Charles XIV John of Sweden (or Karl III Johan in Norwegian), who was at the same time King of Sweden and Norway. In its current layout, it is located between Oslo Central Station and the Royal Palace. The road changes direction and width slightly midway to Egertorget. This is the highest point from which it is possible to see both ends of the street, whose length is 1,020 meters plus 300 meters extension to the Royal Palace. The street includes many of Oslo's tourist attractions such as, in addition to the Royal Palace and Central Station, the Storting (Norwegian Parliament), the National Theater, the old University buildings, the Palace Park and the pond.
