Kingdom of Zacapu

The kingdom of Zacapu was a chupícuaro kingdom that existed between 1124 and 1285. It resisted the Purépecha advance for thirty years. In the end, with the defeat of Queen Quenomen, the kingdom was annexed to the Purépecha Empire. History

In 1124 the Chupícuaro empire is destroyed by the Purépecha and fragmented into four states: Zacapu, Janitzio, Chapala and Apatzingán. Janitzio (which occupies only the homonymous island) was a very weak state and paid tribute to the Mixtec empire (Tututepec); Chapala, on the other hand, had oriented its expansion towards the West. Since neither of the two states had sufficient strength, they were annexed, in two years, to the Purépecha Empire, which at that time dominated the cities of Tzintzuntzan, Patzcuaro and Ihuatzio.

Zacapu managed to resist the advance with a commercial alliance. However, when Ziranzirancámaro ascended the throne, hostilities began. Zacapu was set on fire by the Purépechas, who also destroyed the populations of Acuitzio and Angamacutiro. Ziranzirancámaro died in 1256, and his successor, Carómaco, handed over the country to the invaders. However, Carómaco was killed in 1277, being succeeded by his widow, Quenomen, who, fled to Tututepec, where he armed an army to recover Zacapu. It took Apatzingán and Parácuaro, but when it was arranged to attack the island of Janitzio, a purepecha arrow crossed its canoe and drowned. Without any leader, the zacapuitas gave their country to the invaders. Bibliography
