Mausoleum of Miralpeix

Roman Mausoleum of Miralpeix.

The Miralpeix Mausoleum is a Roman tomb-temple mausoleum found near the Ebro in the municipality of Caspe, in the province of Zaragoza (Aragon, Spain). It was transferred in 1962 to its present location in the urban center of Caspe - in the gardens of the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria la Mayor - for the construction of the Mequinenza reservoir.

The use of its material in later constructions of rural type had altered its structure deeply. Its transfer and subsequent restoration allowed to save the construction, already very degraded. Built in very well cut sandstone blocks, currently of different colors (white, ocher and yellow), it has a rectangular floor plan, being covered by a large barrel vault of 8 meters high. In the corners still rests of columns and capitals of Corinth type appear. Its chronology, difficult in monuments with no other remains than its own typology, can be from the second half of the second century or early third century, coinciding with the deep romanization of the region, based on agricultural exploitation. It is one of the best examples of the long passage of the Roman Empire by the Ebro lands. It was declared a national monument in 1931.
