Social sanction

For other uses of this term, see Penalty.

In psychology the term social sanction is used to describe social reactions, to certain behaviors that are generally characterized as negative. Most of the behaviors considered negative by a society receive a social sanction, but not necessarily a legal sanction. It is also considered a method of social control.

Depending on the type of society in which these negative behaviors develop, it will be punished with a corresponding sanction. As an example to understand the latter: there are oriental cultures in which it is well seen to burp at the table to demonstrate the liking for a meal, but in the West it is considered a lack of respect for others. That is why in the West, not being a lack of respect, it constitutes a legal sanction, but a social sanction.

Social sanctions are supported by social norms that each society dictates. Human relations

On the basis of human relationships can be defined as something that is generated inside and outside a family, institutional environment. They are those established by human beings in coexistence with their peers. Hence, at the same time that contact is established with another human being, human relations begin.
