Celestius

Caelestius (fl. end 4th - early 5th century AD) was a heret from the early Christian period. Caelestius was a contemporaries and companion of Pelagius, founder of the free human will and opponent of the doctrine of inheritance. He preached that there was no inheritance and therefore baptism was not necessary for salvation.

He was sharper and stricter in the doctrine than Pelagius himself. Innocentius I excommunicated Caelestius and Pelagius in 416. His successor Zosimus restored them in 417 after a creed of faith and the vow to conform. Then another great synod took place in Carthage (418-419), both of which condemned both. Zosimus added to this. Also see
