Gisli Illugason

Gisl Illugason (n. 1079 - 1130) was an Icelandic scaler, belonging to the family clan of the Gilsbekkingar, descendant of Bragi Boddason. Details of his life appear in the story Gísls þáttr Illugasonar and Jóns saga helga.

When he was 6 years old, his father was killed by the Viking Gjafvaldr, who later avenged him, and for that reason King Magnus III of Norway sentenced him to death, because he was a member of his hird, but managed to escape conviction and become in one of the royal scales according to Skáldatal.

He participated in the military campaigns of King Magnus in Ireland and west in 1098 and in the Viken border wars against Sweden and Denmark. He ended his days until old age in Iceland and had a son named Einarr.

His most outstanding work is Erfikvæði honoring King Magnus after his death and a lausavísur that appears in Gísls þáttr Illugasonar and Jóns saga helga.
