Kingdom of Saguenay

The name of Kingdom of Saguenay (in French: Royaume du Saguenay) has its origin in an Algonquian legend, as registered during the French colonization in the XVI and XVII centuries. According to the Algonquins, it was a kingdom to the north, with blond and rich men, who owned gold and furs, in a place they called Saguenay. While in France in the 1530s, Donnacona also told stories about him, claiming that he had large silver and gold mines. French explorers in Canada searched in vain for this kingdom. Today, a misunderstanding, or an attempt by Algonquins to confuse or deceive the French, is often considered as totally mythical. However, it is very likely that the legend refers to the Viking settlement in Vinland. First name

The current Saguenay region, including the city of Saguenay (Chicoutimi-Jonquière), is on both banks of the Saguenay River in Quebec. It is part of the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean administrative region. Today, the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean is metaphorically referred to as the Kingdom of Saguenay (Royaume du Saguenay), for example in tourism marketing.
