Multipurpose Laboratory Module

MLM linked to the ISS

The Multipurpose Laboratory Module (MLM), also known as Nauka, is a planned component of the International Space Station ISS. The module is funded by the Russian space agency Roskosmos.

Function

The MLM is linked to the Zarja module and used for experiments, freight storage and the docking of other spacecraft. The MLM will be the primary research module for the Russians. The operating systems can be used by the ISS as a replacement for existing systems, if necessary. Specifications History

In the 1990s, the plans of the Russian section of ISS included a number of research modules that would be linked to Zarja and Zvezda. Since 2000, these plans have been drastically changed, in particular by budget cuts. In August 2004, it was decided to build the MLM of the already existing, but not yet completed, Functional Cargo Block (FGB-2). The FGB-2 was built to replace the Zarja module if necessary.

At the end of 2005, ESA and the Russians agreed that the European Robotic Arm would be launched at the same time as the MLM. The robot arm would be confirmed to the MLM for later deployment.

Originally, the MLM would be ready for launch in 2007 (using a Proton rocket). Due to delays, this launch date was repeatedly shifted. In May 2012, a hoped launch date was mentioned in 2014.
