Acequia Real de Moncada

The Real Acequia de Moncada is one of the oldest hydraulic systems in the Valencian Community, in eastern Spain. Its origins are in the Muslim valence, which implies that it has a history of more than eight hundred years, although it is not known exactly the date it was built or under what conditions. There has been talk of the times of the Caliphate of Cordoba, or of the time of the takeoff of the city of Valencia, in the so-called epoch of the kingdoms of Taifas in the eleventh century, but the truth is that there is no documentation so old nor, for Now, historians have found exact about all of this. Nor does it seem easy for an archaeological excavation to shed more light on the subject, and, consequently, the history of the Moncada ditch during Muslim Valencia remains largely a mystery.

Since always, the strength of its waters has been used for the movement of several mills along its layout, mainly in the vicinity of Paterna. It is a pity that the conservation of this Historical Heritage has not been conducted, one of them having been destroyed in 2007 by a fire before it was restored. In the R.A.M you can observe eels providing their birth. At the time of the 70 the specimens were abundant but when the fertilizers and drains affected the acequia they practically disappeared. Nowadays, due to farmers' awareness of pouring wastewater, the eels are returning. Bibliography
