Dzala ertobashia

Coat of arms of Georgia.

Dzala ertobashia (in Georgian: ძალა ერთობაშია; in Spanish: "Power is in unity") is the national motto of Georgia.

Its origin goes back to the fable of Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani of the same name. According to this fable there was once a king with thirty children. One day, when he felt that his death was near, he called his children and asked them to bring arrows. Then the king asked that the arrows be broken one by one, and the children did. The king then asked them to break all the arrows at once and they could not. The king said: "Learn, children, from this fact: here is the strength of unity, if you stay together, the enemy can not do any harm to you, but if you are divided, victory is on your side."

The unity problem is real for Georgians. It is for that very reason that the Government of the country has chosen this motto among several others, because it reflects well the need of the Nation.

Interestingly, Bulgaria has a very similar motto ("Unity is strength") that comes from an identical legend, in this case with Kubrat, Khan of Greater Bulgaria as the protagonist, who gave his children the same advice with the same example.
