Gil Puyat


Gil J. Puyat (September 1, 1907 - March 23, 1980) was a Philippine businessman and politician. Puyat was a member of the Philippine Senate from 1951 to 1972. The last five years of that period he was President of the Philippine Senate. biography

Gil Puyat studied cum laude and best of his year at the University of the Philippines. His father, Don Gonzalo Puyat, was a businessman and had built a big business empire over the course of time. After graduating, Gil followed his father in one of his businesses. He also built the empire further. Thus he founded Loyola Plans Consolidated in 1968. A company that focuses on life insurance and pensions. At its 33rd, Puyat was appointed dean of the Faculty of Business Administration at the University of the Phillippines.

At the 1951 elections, Puyat was elected as a member of the Philippine Senate. He was reappointed three times, and Senator would remain until Senate's resignation by President Ferdinand Marcos in 1972. From 1967 until 1972, he was also Senate president. At the 1961 elections, Puyat participated in the Vice-Presidential elections as an independent candidate. He ended up with 28% of the votes third, behind Sergio Osmeña Jr. and winner Emmanuel Pelaez.

Puyat died at the age of 72. He was married to Eugenia Guidote. They got seven children together. Some of his children and grandchildren were also politically active later. Jose Puyat Jr. was elected in 1969 as a delegate on behalf of Surigao del Sur and was a member of Batasang Pambansa from 1978 to 1984. Gonzalo Puyat II was a member of Batasang Pambansa from 1982 to 1984 and Maria Consuela Puyat-Reyes was deputy from 1987 to 1992 on behalf of Makati City. Two children from his daughter Margarita Puyat-Bondoc were also deputies. Juan Pablo Bondoc was deputy from 1998 to 2004 on behalf of Pampanga, after which service sister Anna York Bondoc followed him. Externe link
