Lucas de Quirós


Lucas de Quirós (Tocuyo, Venezuela, 1580?) was Major Cosmographer of Peru.

Nephew of the great Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernández de Quirós, he took part in the expedition to the Austrialia of the Holy Spirit as a royal ensign. On the return of that trip surely passed to the Captaincy General of Venezuela, territory where he requested and obtained an encomienda to which he resigned to take part in the new trip of his uncle Pedro Fernandez de Quirós to the Austrialia of the Holy Spirit. In 1610 he made the arrangements to go to Peru with his wife María de Guevara, his uncle and his cousin Francisco. He is appointed Cosmographer of the South Sea, develops maps.
