Adagio (lingüística)

For other uses of this term, see Adagio.

An adage is a very short but easy to memorize phrase, and it contains and expresses some element of knowledge or important experience, considered true by many people, and / or has gained some credibility through continued use. / p>

Adages can be interesting observations, practical ethical guidelines, or pessimistic comments about life in general or some of its aspects. Some adages are the product of popular wisdom, which attempts to summarize some basic truth; this type is generally known as proverb or proverb. And if it describes a general rule of conduct, it is known as the maxim.

On the other hand, an expression not necessarily very beautiful or graceful, but that enjoys a special depth or a good style, is known like aphorism, whereas one with humor or irony receives the name of epigram. Through overuse, an adage can become a cliché or a commonplace. Nowadays The adages employed can be given proper names and be called "laws", in a humorous imitation of physical laws, or principles. Some adages, such as Murphy's Law, are formulated informally and then given a name, while others, such as the Peter Principle, have names from their very formulation; it can be argued that the second type does not constitute a "true" adage, but both types are often difficult to distinguish. Applications Adages formulated in popular works of fiction tend to drift towards popular culture, especially when there is a devout subculture of the corresponding genre, as is the case of science fiction novels. Many professions and subcultures create their own adages, which can then be regarded as a kind of jargon; that kind of adage can be used by the general public, sometimes being altered in the process. Virtual communities such as those developed in forums or newsgroups on the internet also often create their own adages.
