Foley

A Geräus chemist at work

A Geräusch (e) macher (from German, "sound maker") or in Flemish also a britter (from French) is a person who takes care of the sound effects in a movie or audition such as footsteps, beeping doors or ambient sounds . The most common Dutch term for this profession is soundman. Many Italian and Bollywood movies, and almost all animated series and cartoon films, use a Geräuschemacher. In films, unwanted background noise can be poached during shooting, such as flying aircraft.

The English term foley artist used for this is derived from Jack Foley, one of the first who used this method. Foley began his career in the film industry as a stand-in and scenario writer during the stupid movie period.
