Number of Galilei

In fluid mechanics the Galilei number (Ga) is a dimensionless number named in honor of the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei (1564-1642).

This number is proportional to the quotient between gravitational forces and viscous forces. The Galilei number is used in viscous flow and thermal expansion calculations, for example to describe the flow of a layer of fluid on a wall. These flows are applicable in condensers or distillation columns.

Its mathematical definition is: G a = g ⋅ L 3 ν 2 {\displaystyle Ga={\frac {g\cdot L^{3}}{\nu ^{2}}}}
