The kōhanga reo are kindergartens where all instruction is given in the Maori language.

At first they were all established at one time (mid to late 1970s) when there was real fear that the Maori language would disappear. The success of the Kōhanga Reo program was such that they have now been supplemented with primary schools (Te Kura Kaupapa Māori) and secondary schools (Wharekura).

The idea of Kōhanga Reo has been adopted in several places. The most notable event of this is probably found in the pūnana leo, which were established in Hawaii to assist in the revival of the Hawaiian language.
