Tngri

In the pantheon of Mongolian shamanism, tngri (also tengri, tegri) is the class of divinities of greater rank, they have been recognized by sources that go back to the thirteenth century. Its name comes from Tengri an ancient Turkic deity, in different documents the tngri are led by different chief deities and are grouped into several groups - including black (malignant) and white (benevolent), and oriental and western. While it would seem that there are 99 tngri, some documents propose three other groups (from the north), and while they are usually the major deities, some liturgical texts propose an additional group of 33 leading gods along with the tngri. Only the highest ranking shamans and the leaders could summon them for special occasions; they continue to be revered especially in black shamanism. Among the tngri stand out Qormusata Tngri and (Khan) Möngke Tngri. Bibliography
