Geography of Somalia

Map of Somalia.

Somalia, the easternmost country in Africa, occupies an area of 637,540 km². It is located at the tip of a region commonly known as the Horn of Africa - due to its similarity on the map with a rhinoceros horn - of which Ethiopia and Djibouti are also part.

The Somali territory is composed mainly of plains, plateaus and highlands. In the north, however, the Karkaar Mountain is located at a variable distance from the Gulf of Aden. The weather is warm during the whole year with inclement summers, except in the territories of greater altitude of the north of the country. In spite of being located in the terrestrial equator the rain in the country is rare, and most of Somalia is in arid semi-arid land, suitable only for the nomadic grazing that practices more than half of the population. Only in areas of moderate rainfall, in the northwest and southwest, where the two major rivers of the country are located, is agriculture of some importance practiced.

Local geology suggests the presence of valuable mineral deposits. The long coast of Somalia (3025 kilometers) has had historical importance, because it allowed the trade of the Middle East with East Africa and now as an obligatory way to the Suez Canal. List of populations
