Sestra

Sestra in the twenties

The Sestra (Russian: Сестра; Finnish: Rajajoki or Siestarjoki; Swedish: Systerbäck) is a 74 kilometer long river located in Karelia in the Russian Oblast Leningrad. The Russian name of the river is called Сестра, meaning 'Sister', the Swedish name is Systerbäck (Zusterbeek), while the Finns speak of 'Rajajoki', or 'Grensrivier'. The Sestra, on the border between Karelia and Ingermanland, formed the border between Sweden and Russia between 1323 and 1721. From that year, the river basin only fell in Russia, but from 1812 to 1944 Russia shared the river with Finland, which was the natural border. Today, the river is completely in Russia.
