Inland Waterways Signaling

Signalization of Voies the Navigation Intérieure (SIGNI) is a European inland waterway system and seamlessly connects to the IALA system (Region A).

Within the SIGNI system, it is important to know how to design the banks of a waterway and what the direction of concrete is. The terms left bank and right bank are used. What's left and what's right is determined by where the high side can be found. From the high side coming (looking towards the sea) is the right bank or right side and left is left or left. From the high side coming towards the sea is also the direction of emphasis.

This is not always easy to determine because not all waterways have a source. In the Netherlands, therefore, the following principles apply:

The road on the right side of the waterway is red in color, and on the left side of the waterway green in color, and seamlessly connect to IALA system (Region A). The transition between SIGNI and IALA-A is regulated by the countries themselves and the result of both systems is the same.
