International Council of Museums

The International Council of Museums, shortly ICOM, is an international organization of which both museums and museum staff and restaurators can be members. ICOM was founded in 1946 and is an independent non-governmental organization. However, ICOM maintains relationships with UNESCO, as one of the four major international cultural organizations in the field of cultural heritage. (The other are ICOMOS (monuments), ICA (archives) and IFLA (libraries.)

ICOM limits its goals not only to the heritage that is included in museums or private collections. In addition to this primary objective, ICOM also focuses on other heritage, both natural and cultural, both material and non-material. ICOM is located in Paris.

ICOM has both national and international committees. Members of a national committee are directly members of the international organization. A total of 118 national committees, including the ICOM Netherlands Association. By joining one of the 30 international committees (including, for example, ICOFOM and ICOMMPR), more than 35,000 members can keep up-to-date in a museal specialty. International IC's Committees
