Isle of Pentecost

The island of Pentecost or Pentecôte is one of the 83 islands that make up Vanuatu. It is 190 km north of the capital Port Vila.

Pentecost is a mountainous island that runs from north to south about 60 km. The mountain range, dominated by Mount Vulmat (947 m) marks the boundary between the wet and rainy east coast and the more temperate west coast. The island has about 12,000 permanent inhabitants (1999).

Pentecost was discovered on 22 May 1768 by Louis Antoine de Bougainville and was influenced by successive missionaries but never lost its customs.
