Kokkeibon

Kokkeibon (滑稽 本, literally "comic book") is a genre and type of early modern Japanese novels. It appears at the end of the Edo period during the nineteenth century. As a genre, it portrays the comic behavior occurring in the everyday life of the common people.

The kokkeibon kind takes over from the dangibon genre. Jippensha Ikku's Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige (1802-1822) is considered the first representative novel. A less strict definition includes dangibon as an "early kokkeibon."

The kokkeibon usually consists of a dialogue between the main characters and includes illustrations. The genre, which is most popular from 1804 to 1830, is best represented with the works of Jippensha Ikku and Shikitei Sanba. code Sourceschange the code Referencingchange the code
