The resistance of certain bacteria to the aggression of bacteriophages has been called a restriction in virology. This is the restriction to the rule of sensitivity of bacteria to phages.

This resistance is explained by the secretion of enzymes called "restriction enzymes", which cut, as soon as it enters the cell, the DNA of the virus that tries to infect the bacterium.

In molecular biology jargon, restriction refers to the cleavage of a DNA strand by a restriction enzyme.
