Nguyen Minh Triet


Nguyễn Minh Triết (Bến Cát, October 8, 1948) was elected president of Vietnam from 2006 to 2011 by 464 votes (94.12%) by the national assembly. Prior to that he was head of Vietnam's Communist Party in Ho Chi Minh City. He was succeeded by Trương Tấn Sang as president.

After Nguyễn Minh Triết had taught mathematics in Ho Chi Minh City, he became a member of the communist party in 1965. In 1992 he was appointed as leader in the southern part of the province of Sông Bé. He formed the predominantly agricultural province into an attractive area for foreign investors. He joined the Politburo in 1997 and became the party leader of Ho Chi Minh City in 2000. In that position he was responsible for a plan against corruption and organized crime. He ensured that a body of organized crime, Nam Cam, was arrested and convicted.
