Prométhée is a database on forest fires in the Mediterranean region of France. Designed and launched in 1973 by Maurice Gouiran, this operation covers 15 departments in the South-East.

A database is a set of homogeneous, consistent and representative (if not exhaustive) files. The initial problem that Prométhée had to solve was to gather the data coming from various services, to work together actors of different culture, training and experience, to invent a communication interface and a common language. Because the problem of forest fires is treated in France - contrary to what happens in many other countries - by various and varied entities: different ministries manage firefighters, foresters, gendarmes, weather, communities intervene on several levels: the commune, the department, the region, the state and interdepartmental bodies were created. Add to that a pinch of researchers, more and more teachers who are opening up on the environment, companies that provide financial support, associations that offer their volunteerism and media fond of these images that haunt our summers .

Prometheus therefore aims to federate and harmonize data from various sources and redistribute the results to all those who are concerned by the problem of forest fires. edit code
