Storax (balm)

Storax is a type of balm.

Two classes are distinguished:

The storaque is blackish brown, opaque, soft and sticky when it is dry. In this state it is susceptible to break even with some difficulty. Its fracture is mate and granugienta: it is often falsified with wood sawdust, whose fraud is known by treating it with alcohol because then the sawdust remains undissolved. It is also falsified with the rosin that makes it drier; This fraud is not easy to recognize. It is sometimes received wrapped in rotal leaves and in that case it bears the name of estoraque calamita.

The liquid storax is confused many times - albeit wrongly - with liquid amber. It comes from Altingia excelsa, which grows in India.
