Upper Siang District

Upper Siang is an administrative district in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India. The headquarters is located in Yingkiong. The district occupies an area of ​​6188 km² and has a population of 33,146 inhabitants. (2001).

Several groups of the Adi and Memba tribes live in the district. The Adi generally follow the Donyi-Polo cult, and Memba are followers of Tibetan Buddhism.

The district is the location where the massive hydroelectric project of the Upper Siang is located. History

At some point in its history this area was part of Tibet and was known as Pemako. Most people were from the Adi tribe, while the Memba and Khampa groups came to the district during the 1962 Chinese assault.
