Weapon of the Duke of Richmond, Lennox and Gordon
Duke of Richmond (English: Duke of Richmond) is an English title.
The title duke of Richmond was first created in 1525 by Hendrik VIII for his bastard son Henry FitzRoy. After his childless death in 1536 the title was crowned.
In 1623, Jacobus VI created the title for Ludovic Stewart, Duke of Lennox. Since then, at a short break from 1624 to 1641, both duchesses have always been kept intact.
In 1641 the title was created for the third time (Ludovic Stuart was childless with the title expired), now for Ludovic's cousin James Stuart. In 1672 the title was released, after which Charleman II awarded his bastard son Charles Lennox. Since then, the title has remained in the Lennox family. In 1876 the duke became Duke of Gordon, with which he is the only British nobleman to have three dukes (namely Richmond, Lennox and Gordon).
