New Venetian School

The New Venetian School is a movement in contemporary music, which, as the name says, started in Venice in the seventies. It consists of composers directly influenced by Baron Ernesto Rubin de Cervin (Albrizzi) (born in Venice in 1936), which in turn was taught by Luigi Dallapiccola and Goffredo Petrassi, and taught at the Conservatory Benedetto Marcello in Venice. One of his students was the conductor and composer Giuseppe Sinopoli. Other "followers" were the composer and teacher Marino Baratello, composer Claudio Ambrosini and the English composer Geoffrey King in Amsterdam. Other contributors, such as Bruno Maderna and Luigi Nono, have contributed their contributions.

There is no specific style that characterizes this movement; The music is varied and shows characteristics of serialism, especially in the music of Rubin de Cervin and his pupil Sinopoli; Elements of the jazz are also often noticeable (especially in Baratello's music); In addition, the emphasis is often on modern polyphony. Finally, Schoenberg and the Second Vienna School's influences, as well as experimental serial and post-serial developments such as those in Darmstadt, more specifically in Stockhausen's music, can be found in this school.
