Prometheus (Goethe)

"Prometheus" is a poem written by Goethe between 1772 and 1774. The poetic I of the text is the mythical personage Prometheus, who defiantly addresses Zeus, defending the liberation of the human being in front of the cult of the divine.

The poem is an important piece of the Sturm und Drang movement. It can also be related to the ideals of the Enlightenment, since it proclaims the autonomy of the human being with respect to the divine.
