The Amsterdam Wind Orchestra


The Amsterdam Wind Orchestra is a harmonic orchestra consisting of professional musicians for whom the wind music takes a special place in the heart. Their enthusiasm for symphonic wind music they want to convey to music lovers with concerts and related educational activities. All this with the aim of maintaining and developing the rich Dutch Dutch music culture.

The Amsterdam Wind Orchestra was founded in 1989 as the only occupational orchestra in the Netherlands that the performance of symphonic bladder music at the highest level is the primary objective. The orchestra soon acted as a professional ambassador of the blowing music culture at home and abroad.

Under the leadership of chief conductor Heinz Friesen, the orchestra gained international fame through its own orchestral sound and performing existing and new works for symphonic wind orchestra in the 1990s. The orchestra was on stage like the Concertgebouw, De Doelen and Vredenburg. It also made regular recordings, including the most popular CDs The Lord of the Rings and The Big Apple with Johan de Meij's music.

Grachtenfestival 2009

Twenty years after the foundation, the Amsterdam Wind Orchestra was once again listened to for a number of years, during the final concert of the Amsterdam Canal Festival. Under the leadership of promising conductor Ivan Meylemans, former solo trombone player of the Royal Concertgebouw Works, the orchestra repertoire performed for symphonic wind band. The program included composer Igor Stravinsky, the Concert for piano and wind band, with solo pianist Daria van den Bercken, and Suite De Vuurvogel in a blister orchestra editing.
