Tible

The tible (also called Discant Schalmei) is a typical Catalan double-row wind instrument. The instrument, like its larger brother, is derived from the medieval xeremia (schalmei) and is therefore also referred to as the xeremia tible. The instrument belongs to the Hobo family. It is a soprano instrument: one sees the designation soprano scalmei. Construction

The tible is clearly smaller than the tenora and, in contrast to the tenora, it is made entirely of jujube wood. The length is about 55 cm and the instrument consists of three parts: the upper two parts contain a valve system, and the lower part contains four fingers. Musical properties and application

The tible is a transposing instrument in f. The ambitus is about two and a half octave: from A2 to E5. The timbre is somewhat sharp. The instrument is part of the cobla, the Sardana orchestra in Catalonia, in which it often coincides with the tenor in musical dialogues.
