The Dagor Bragollach began when Morgoth flooded rivers of fire from Angband, destroying the invading Noldorinian armies.
Initially, Noldor and Edain did another attempt to defend themselves, but they suffered huge losses. The former green plain of Ardgalen was destroyed and was called Anfauglith, and the highlands of Dorthonion, where the Edain lived until that time, became a hostile area.
