The Hu Lao Gate is a mountain pass northwest of Sinkiang, Henan province, China. It is the site of several historic battles as it was a major defense point on the way to Luoyang, capital of several dynasties . Among the various battles developed here, however, the Battle of the Gate of Hu Lao, a fictional battle described in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms of Luo Guanzhong, is the most celebrated, when the allied forces of the lords of the war, led by Yuan Shao, attempted to overthrow Dong Zhuo. Lu Bu was defeated here by the three conspired brothers, Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei.
This alleged battle is not documented in the records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi), the most authoritative source on the history of the last years of the Eastern Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdom period.
