Patrick Nelson, idle manager of a garage, lonely, a little shy and inclined to adventure through his readings of epic stories, lives in the neighborhood where there are several murders. Insomniac, he is one of the first onlookers to visit the scene of the crime where the people of the neighborhood and the police crowd. Among the police officers is a charming investigator for whose eyes Nelson, in desperation, throws his AAA membership card into a bush and becomes a very intriguing suspect.

The story shifts from LA to such wondrous, scary African worlds, projecting reading into Nelson's mind as it leaves the factual narrative of the investigation's progress. The plot is breathless and enriches to the end of elements revealing very interesting personalities and extremely well mixed.
