Section sign


The section or paragraph sign (§; Unicode U + 00A7, HTML entity & # 167;) is a typographic character commonly used to refer to a particular section of a document, such as a legal code. It is frequently used together with the pilot (¶). When duplicated, such as §§, which is read as the plural "sections" (§§ 13-21), analogously to the words "pp." (Pages). This sign originates when joining two eses (s) that abbreviate in Latin signum sectionis.

The ASCII code associated with this character is the decimal number 21, therefore, it can be entered in the Windows operating system with the key combination Alt + 21, or alternatively with the combination Alt + 0167. In macOS you can enter with the Option + K combination, while in other Unix systems or in any GNU / Linux distribution using X Window System it is written with Shift + Alt Gr + S.
