Jump (motorcycle)

Spring is a historic motorcycle brand in Belgium.

They were made by Atéliers Spring, Tilff-Liège from 1910 to 1940.

This brand is named after its own innovation: in 1910 there were motorcycles with front suspension, but rear suspension was still virtually unavailable. The "Spring" (feather) had these: front and back suspension.

The machines were made clear to the more wealthy customers focused on luxury and comfort. This also appears from the used self-propelled engines: 500, 750 and 1000cc, longitudinal V-twins and four-cylinder line engines. These four cylinders must be developed by Henri Gonthier (see: Gonthier). From 1910 to 1912, Spring also produced side tension.

In 1920 the rear suspension was modified in a special way: a connection was made between the rear wheel and the saddle: For each millimeter the rear wheel went up or down, the saddle moved in reverse. In this way, the (theoretical) saddle must be kept quiet on a bumpy road. The used treadmills increased the comfort again, but were so wide that the engine could not be overridden. One could probably not bend with a lack of ground clearance.

In the mid-twenties, a reverse gear was also available for sidecar use. All frames were sturdy enough to mount a side panel. In addition, the wheels were interchangeable (also with the sidecar) and when the rear wheel was dismantled, the drive gear and brake part remained just a thing, which is not possible with many modern motorcycles.

It is strange, however, that the brand, which used exclusively longitudinal engines, nevertheless used chain drive instead of the more maintenance-friendly cardiac drive. The Spring engine blocks were nicely finished. All mechanical parts were built invisibly.

The crisis years also caused problems for Spring, but still the brand was able to stand up to the outbreak of World War II. The factory still existed in 1951, but no motorcycles were produced anymore.
