Petros Protopapadakis


Petros Protopapadakis (Greek: Πέτρος Πρωτοπαπαδάκης) (1854-1922), Greek engineer and politician. He was born in 1854 in Naxos. He studied at the University of Athens and then in Paris.

On his return to Greece, he taught until 1890 before being commissioned to build the Corinth Canal. Next, he was in charge of the construction of several railway lines.

He entered politics in 1902. He was Minister of Surety in several Governments and became a Prime Minister of Greece on May 22, 1922.

During his tenure the Greek army was severely defeated in the Greco-Turkish war. Protopapadakis was condemned as responsible for the catastrophe and executed in Athens the morning of November 28, 1922 along with other condemned, as Dimitrios Gounaris, another Greek Prime Minister. In the 21st century, the sentence was appealed by his grandson, Michalis Protopapadakis, and on October 20, 2010 the Greek supreme court annulled the sentence.
