The Freak

The Freak an unfinished dramatic comedy by Charlie Chaplin, on which he worked at the end of his life, but could not realize.

The story revolves around a young South American girl who unexpectedly sees him pushing a pair of wings. She is kidnapped and taken to London, where her captors are trying to pass her off as an angel. Later, she manages to escape, but is finally arrested because of her appearance. She is then put on trial to determine whether she is human or not.

Chaplin started working on this screenplay around 1969 with his daughter Victoria, with the main role in mind. But Victoria's unplanned marriage and Chaplin's already advanced age were obstacles that prevented the film from being made.

In his memoirs, My Life in Pictures, published in 1974, Chaplin refers to The Freak as a work in progress. "I want to do it one day", is it written in a legend next to a picture of Victoria in winged costume published in his book of Memoirs. He also mentioned his intention to do so in an interview published on the occasion of his 85 anniversary in 1974. None of the footage is known, although a brief color sequence of Victoria with the wings can be seen in Charlie Chaplin - The Swiss Years (2003). Source of translationedit code
