Haitz Act

Haitz's law states that every decade, the cost per lumen at leds decreases by a factor of 10 and that the amount of light emitted by each led increases by a factor of 20. The law of Haitz is similar to Moore's law, an experience law for transistors. Who compares both laws, sees that slower efficiency is predicted for the efficiency of leds than for transistors. In an article from 2000, Haitz forecasts that efficiency will increase linearly from around 20 Lm / Watt in 2000 to 100 Lm / Watt in 2010. This expectation has been achieved. The 2011 expectation that there would be 150 lumens per watt in a few years, was realized in mid 2013, such lamps were on the market. Through better materials and manufacturing processes for leds, clarity and efficiency are getting better. This development continues, while traditional light sources are not improved to the same extent. Over the past 40 years, the cost of LEDs has fallen sharply, while the light output increased.

The best high-pressure sodium lamps achieved around 140 lumens per watt in 2011 and high-pressure metal halide lamps reached 120 lumens per watt, while the best fluorescent lamps reached 100 lumens per watt. In 2011, good leds achieved 130 lumen per watt, while 200 lumen per watt had already been realized in the laboratory. In 2013 there were leds with 150 lumen per watt on the market.
