Information Society

An information society is a society in which the creation, distribution, dissemination, use, integration and manipulation of information is an important economic, political and cultural activity. The knowledge economy is the economic equivalent, with emphasis on the creation of wealth through the economic exploitation of insights. People who have the means to participate in this form of society are also called digital citizens. Beniger (1986) has shown that this is one of the many dozens of labels to suggest that we have come to a new phase of society.

The information society is characterized by rapid change in the technological, economic, occupational, spatial and / or cultural fields. The information society is seen as the successor to industrial society. Closely related concepts include post-industrial society (Daniel Bell), post-Fordism, postmodern society, knowledge society, information revolution, liquid modernity and network society (from Manuel Castells).
